How to Avoid Disappointment when Dimming Retrofit LED Lamps - 9 General Rules

Everyone in the know will tell you that LEDs will dominate the lighting world, having made their proper breakthrough in recent years. However, there remains the problem of ‘retrofitting’ dimming LEDs, wherein consumers are looking to swap their CFLs and traditional incandescent bulbs to dimmable LEDs. The problem of retrofitting dimming LED lighting It is no wonder today’s consumers are looking to buy LEDs over CFLs, which have off-putting and unseemly designs. And as for traditional incandescents, who would choose to pay so much more in energy bills if they could just make the switch and help the environment in the process? Especially since now LEDs have been designed in many cases to resemble traditional incandescent bulbs. A big problem with the LED ‘revolution’ was the switchover to LED dimmer lights. However, companies such as Varilight and MK Electrics stepped in to make a huge variety of new dimmers for the swathe of LED lights that were being produced.Buy LED Dimmers at Sparks Dimming Retrofit LED Lamps - 9 General Rules 1. Ensure that you are purchasing an LED light that is compatible with your existing LED dimmer. It is a common misconception that every single LED light can be dimmed. It is essential to choose lamps that the manufacturer has described explicitly as  ‘dimmable’ in their literature. 2. Stick to recognised brands. Unfortunately, many manufacturers are all too happy to incorrectly label their lights as ‘dimmable’. This is mainly due to a lack of an industry standard that establishes a precedent for dimmable LED drivers. We would heartily recommend choosing from the most established lighting manufacturers. Setting dimming considerations aside, bigger names are more likely to offer you better warranties, longer lamp lifetimes, and more customer support. In this article, we discuss three Manufacturers who made reliable dimmer compatible LEDs: Varilight, MK Electric, Danlers, and Lutron, though there are many more who do the job well. This article discusses the issue in more detail. Varilight's various ranges of 'V-Pros' are recognized for their silent operation and programmable intelligent functionality, for instance, the ever-popular Varilight JQP252W, which can be purchased here.Buy Varilight LED Dimmers 3. Do read the label. The brightness range of a bulb must be considered carefully if you are replacing an incandescent bulb with an LED, as it may not be worth your while. This is due to the great advancement in the number of lumens produced by LED bulbs, which have achieved halogen-mimicking ‘white light’ type of looks. Some LED bulbs can produce as much as 100 lumens per Watt. So, if you are using a vintage LED lamp that is emulating the old-school low lighting of traditional bulbs, then LED dimmers shouldn't be of any concern to you; you’ll be sticking to a single dim light anyway! 4. Ask Manufacturers about Compatibility Most renowned lighting brands will publish data on their websites concerning compatibility when it comes to switching light types. Dimmer switches have been tested to discover what type of lights they will be compatible with, when looking at loads, lamp performance and so on. These trustworthy manufacturers will give grades, or even a compatibility guide, as a useful reference point which can help considerably when choosing a dimmer for your LED. This can be ultimately confusing when navigating international sites that do not use the same grading standard. If you are in any doubt you should contact the company to ask for their recommendation for a light switch. 5. Don't use a standard dimmer Some lamp manufacturers state that LEDs don't need a specialized dimmer and that a standard dimmer will do the trick: don’t be fooled! The LED technology is advancing, but we are not there yet: even though the likes of Megaman come out with LEDs that can be dimmed with both a trailing-edge and leading-edge dimmers, we cannot yet recommend using a regular dimmer for LED lamps. Standard dimmers tend to be under-loaded in most LED applications, leading to unpleasant flickering and strobing effects, which dramatically reduce the lamps lifetime. Standard dimmers are never even equipped to exploit the full brightness range of an LED bulb like a specialized remote could do. 6. Choose a dimmer designed for LED lighting The most top of the range, sophisticated dimmers will likely deliver the best possible performance you can expect from your LED light. Some, such as Varilight’s LED Dimmer have several dimmer modes that enable you to gracefully dim across the various and diverse driver technologies across the entire market. Another advantage of this dimmer is that it accounts for the difference in maximum brightness between brands. This means you have an easily adjustable minimum brightness setting that will enable you to harness the full brightness potential of your lamp. The adjustable minimum brightness also ensures that a lamp will not experience the flickering, malfunctioning behavior outlined in point 5. 7. Don’t buy your lights without first selecting a Dimmer Don’t buy your lights without first selecting a Dimmer - make sure your LED light is dimmable! See the Integral LED Ciclo LED Outdoor Wall Light 11W, to be purchased here. Like all dimmer switches, those designed specifically for LED lighting have a minimum and maximum load recommendation. Your lighting installation should be designed in a manner that means you don’t exceed the maximum load of dimmers available. Dividing the load across more than one dimmer could provide you with a brilliant solution by giving you great light control levels that can be zoned within a multi-functional space. Until very recently it was problematic to find a dimmer that was capable of controlling upwards of 100W of LED lighting. However, the launch of Varilight’s V-Com series has opened the door for potentially much larger loads - upwards of 600W.Buy LED Wall Lights at Sparks 8. Do read the Instruction Leaflet Don’t rush with your LED dimmer switch as you may be missing out on a lot of fun! LED dimmers come with features solely intended to enhance their performance, but this may require a little bit of programming first. For instance, with Varilight’s V-Pro remote control dimmers, there is are enhanced scene-setting features, unlocked through the innovative ‘LightScene’ handset. Many manufacturers have ‘how to’ videos featured on their website. 9. Dispose of your old lights Responsibly When it comes to old, still-functioning halogen lights, you need to throw them away or recycle them. You can find more information on doing this here. Never throw CFLs into your general waste as they contain dangerous mercury. Lux Live 2014: What we Saw and Loved during our Short Visit to this Lighting Show

One more year, one more LuxLive - this time it was #LuxLive2014 on Twitter - where many lighting exhibitors came to both display and talk about their latest and greatest. You could hear the latest lighting tech from the big brands, listen to up to 50 hours of free talks in their arenas, and see most of the world's biggest lighting brands. And all of this only in two days. We made it to the second day toward the end of the show, but we saw quite a few things. The emphasis, you guessed it, is LED: LED "fluorescent" lights, LED wall lights, LED light bulbs (some of which were even offered for free!), LED floor lights, LED outdoor lights, LED flood lights, LED everywhere. We couldn't see all that was exhibited, and we couldn't possibly post about it on the blog, but here are our top picks of what we saw and loved at this years' Lux Live. BEG Luxomat at Lux Live 2014The German brand BEG Luxomat was present with some new stuff besides the well-known PIRs: now they have Luxomatic, groupable, energy-efficient lights for wall and ceiling mounting, and they also have some new versions of PIRs that can be individually programmable and resettable via a Bluetooth remote control. Great idea, with the mention: please secure the access to the PIRs and occupancy detectors! Illuma Lighting at Lux Live 2014As usual, Illuma was there showcasing their latest LED track spotlights, and their "5-year guarantee" promise was right up on the wall. They came out with some new products, of which we are about to find out more soon.Buy Illuma Lights at Sparks Danlers at Lux Live 2014The great people at Danlers were there, with their PIR occupancy switches for wall or ceiling mounting, and this time they have something new: the ControlZAPP system. It is a new innovative energy saving lighting control with remote control and programming via an Android app. Also, they have their new LED dimming modules which promise to work with most dimmable LED lamps. Aurora Lighting at Lux Live 2014 We didn't stay much at their booth, but Aurora Lighting promised to showcase some unparalleled LED technologies with a team of representatives (all dressed in light green T-shirts) to discuss excellence in driverless luminaires. Check out their coverage and photo gallery via their blog.Buy Aurora Lights at Sparks BELL Lighting at Lux Live 2014BELL Lighting had a wide range of LED lamps in all kinds of lamp caps, wattages, lumens, and shapes. Quite interesting to see how many types are out there. Gap Lighting at Lux Live 2014We loved the display Gap Lighting put on, showcasing their LED wall lights for outdoors and LED ceiling lights for indoors, including some of their best LED strip lights and flood lights. Retrotouch at Lux Live 2014A great brand soon to be distributed by us, the people at RetroTouch have a wide range of touch and remote switches and dimmers. Rocker light switches, touch light switches, glass remote switches, dimmer remote switches, etc you name it - great alternative to the existing wiring devices. CoeLux at Lux Live 2014Something that blew us all out of our mind is the CoeLux skylight technology bringing the sunlight to windowless spaces. The pictures above don't do it justice, so you will have to watch the videos below. How about that! LED technology bringing artificial skylight that you won't believe it is real! Kosnic at Lux Live 2014Some awesome LED downlights, Facet LED downlights, LED panels, and twin bar LED panels (replacing the ceiling modular panels), and all kinds of LED PowerSpot GU10, Reon LEDs, and LED lights for home from Kosnic. Great stuff.Franklite at Lux Live 2014Since the buzzword is LED, Franklite also came out with some high-quality LED wall lights, LED chandeliers, LED table lamps, and much more. Great fittings from a renowned brand of light fixtures. ...and much more. We are pretty sure most of the lighting exhibitors at LuxLive already posted (or will post) on their blog or news section, but this is our take on what we saw and loved the most at Lux Live this year. We hope you enjoyed them! PS. Last year's review for Lux Live is here.

Lux Live 2013 Day 1: LED Lights, Energy Saving, and Lots of Good Talks

For the second year in a row, we went to visit the annual Lux Live lighting exhibition in Earl Court, and we were not disappointed. As the title says it, everyone was focused on energy saving and LED lighting. And, if possible, the reducing of the costs both for manufacturing the LED lights and for purchasing them. We took a look around, visited some of our old friends :) and made new friends too, and listened to a talk or two, snapped a photo or two, tweeted a bit.... Speaking of pictures, here are some of our Instagrams from this time (in case you missed them or you didn't follow us on twitter): Illuma Lighting at #LuxLive2013 - new LED spotlights for track systems, including some awesome remote-controlled track spotlights for commercial lighting!Buy online Illuma Lighting at Sparks Danlers - Lots of PIR occupancy switch modules, either ceiling or wall-mounted. Check out Microlux and Sign Lights here. Rako Total Lighting Control Systems with their blobs and dimmers and systems for remotely controlling the lights, both switching and dimming them from your iOS device....great guys. You can find them on our site. Name and Shame #LuxLive2013 - the last session we sneak-peaked at, with proof pictures of light fittings installed incorrectly, ON still during the day, energy waste, etc. Today is the second day of #LuxLive2013, and you can visit the many booths of lighting manufacturers, lighting resellers, lighting designers, etc plus listen to the great talks and sessions they have available in more than 3 venues (including the one in the middle of the show!).And a big thank you to all the ones organizing the show and making it possible! :)

Danlers is Helping You Select the Appropriate PIR Occupancy Switch

Winners of the Queen's Awards for Enterprise for Innovation in 2010, Danlers Ltd is a family-owned UK company which designed and manufactured electronic energy-saving lighting controls for the past 20 years or so. Their R&D team is continually working on developing next-generation products in the lighting control industry, facing the well-known challenge of the influx of newer technologies of LED lights and other digital technologies. Tony Kay (the executive chairman) says, DANLERS commitment to reliability, simplicity and our UK manufacturing heritage is at the heart of why customers like our products. Helping You Select the Right PIR Switch If you browse our website or any online store with PIR switches, you tend to either be confused or not be clear about which switch you need. We apologize for the inconvenience of not yet having a precise page where we can present the below information, but for now we would like to at least post on our blog some ideas and information that may help you choose the right PIR occupancy switch. It is very important to consult with your electrician, first of all, and secondly to know what you're buying. Here are some categories or criteria of choosing a PIR occupancy switch: Ceiling Mounted PIR Switches with 360 degrees Detection Zone As per the diagram above, Danlers has a wide range of ceiling-mounted PIR occupancy switches which have a 360-degree detection zone. They can be either flush mounted (in false ceilings or plasterboard ceilings), or surface mounted (having a small projection from the ceiling). Also, they can be hard wired or plug & socket. Ceiling Mounted PIR Switches with 120 degrees detection angle or low-range directional narrow beam Besides the PIR occupancy detector switches with a full 360-degree detection zone you can have the surface-mounted plug and socket CEDR + CESO (120 degrees directional detection angle) or the CEDR 6PLR + CESO (with a long-range directional narrow beam). Wall Mounted PIR Switches with 120 Degrees Detection Angle If you need a wall-mounted PIR switch with a plaster depth wall box (16mm), there's the WACE PIR and WAPIR needing or not needing neutral wire respectively. They both have a 120-degree detection angle.Best PIR Switches at Sparks Where Do People Use PIR Switches? The PIR switches are becoming very common both at home and in the office, since they have a time lag switch incorporated which automatically turns ON or OFF the lights when activated, dealing once and for all with the problem of "I forgot the lights ON!" This means you can use PIR switches and time lag switches in places like the living room, the bedroom, in offices, factories, schools, workshops, factories, hotels, canteens, staff rooms, corridors, stairwells, changing rooms, students accommodations, toilet blocks, military accommodation, etc. And you can buy them at some of the most affordable prices via, Time Lag Switches, and, Occupancy Detector Switches, on our website.

Danlers Explains the PIR Occupancy Switches and PIR Detectors

The good people at Danlers have some great guides related to PIR occupancy switches, where to use them, what all the technical jargon means, and so on. Today we were looking at the "PIR occupancy switch specifications" section and we found it inspiring. What is a PIR switch? What does it mean "adjustable time lag"? What's an adjustable photocell? These and some other questions are dealt with below. What is a PIR detector? A PIR is a passive infrared quad-person detector. It is a sensor that measures via infrared the light radiating from objects or beings in its field of view/area of sight. What is the Adjustable Time Lag? The PIR detectors have an adjustable time lag adjustable in nine steps, with the following approximate values: 10 sec, 20sec, 40sec, 1.25min, 2.5mins, 5mins, 10mins, 20mins, 40mins. What is an Adjustable Photocell? A photocell is "inhibit on", which means that it will "inhibit the lights" from switching on when someone enters an area with plenty of ambient light. Also, if the photocell detects that someone already is in an area and the lights are switched on, it will allow the lights to remain on (regardless of any increase in the light level). This feature is for avoiding any nuisance like switching off the lights when people are still in the room or there's a meeting going on in that venue. The photocell detects a range of 100-111lux (and photocell inactive) falling on the working plane. What Load Do Danlers PIR Switches Take? What is the maximum load that the Danlers PIR switches can take? All the Danlers PIR occupancy detectors can switch up to 1500W 6Amp at 230V of resistive, transformer, or fluorescent loads, up to 500W 2Amp of low energy lighting loads (like the compact fluorescent and the LED lights), or up to 250W 1Amp of fans/metal halide lamps. Of course, a few PIR switches can be wired in parallel in order to control the same load. The Initial Start-up Mode When a PIR switch is set up and the mains supply is connected to the PIR occupancy switch for the first time, it goes through something called "Start-up mode". The switch is turned on for 1min, then switches off and enters its "Operating Mode". Please note that if a manual wall switch is feeding the PIR occupancy switch, it will go through the start-up mode each time the wall switch is switched ON. But if you wire the manual wall switch in the alternative position, the supply to the PIR occupancy switch will be uninterrupted and it will remain in "operating mode" (it won't go through "start-up mode" each time the wall switch is ON). Do you have any questions concerning the Danlers Occupancy Switches and PIR detectors? Please leave a comment below, or contact Danlers via their website. You can purchase Danlers occupancy detectors and time lag switches via the Lighting PIR section on our website. Danlers PIR Switches and Photocells
