We visited Lux Live 2017, so here are some Interesting LED Lights and Technologies

Last week we went to the annual Lux Live, Lux Live 2017, one of the greatest lighting shows in Europe. We only had a few hours on the first day to check it out, so we didn't attend seminars and speeches, but the place was pretty packed and there was a lot of good vibe all around. We saw some really interesting LED lights and LED lighting technologies, and we also saw quite a few Chinese manufacturers bringing their LED lights to the European market. As they say on their website, lighting is changing, and there are smarter and better luminaires. What seemed to be a "fad" a few years ago with LEDs, now it has developed to become one of the biggest lighting revolutions ever. From the Gooee IoT arena to the LIA live and the escape zone, from exhibitors to hundreds of free talks (when you're tired of walking and talking), from the lightspace arena to the LIA lighting academy, and from Li-fi experience to the smart spaces conference, we loved this years Lux Live! We didn't take too many pictures, and we can't talk about every company we met, so here we'll list some of our friends and suppliers that we got to talk to and see their newest stuff. Astro Lighting - LED lights and even some Track LightsThey came out with their new catalogue fresh off the press at this lighting show, and they displayed their lights in a very simple design. It was an honor to meet James Bassant, the design director and one of the founders of Astro Lighting, and have a chat concerning some of their newest additions (like the new track lights and spotlights). Loved the simple and not-so-packed arrangement of their LED wall lights, ceiling lights, and exterior lamps; they really give you an impression of their excellent design.Buy Astro Tracks and Spots Rako Controls - All NEW Wireless ModulesIf you're looking for mood lighting and ambience lighting and you're not ready to break the bank with more expensive solutions like Lutron, Rako Controls is what you need. At LuxLive they brought in their all new wireless modules, and they had a great display of the DMX, constant current LED modules, silent transistor dimmers, curtain and blinds, constant voltage LEDs, inductive dimmers, DALI control, 1-10V and DSI, and switched loads modules. Also, they have a new NFC product range, with the wired functionality from a wireless keypad, and they connect to any conventional switch. B.E.G. - the Lighting Control ProfessionalsWe visited BEG only in passing, and we admired their PIR detectors and their new PureColour detector for wellbeing with color control (controlling the light color in a LED bulkhead). German quality! Horton LightingMany of our ballasts and fluorescent trays are from Horton Lighting, and they continue to bring in some of the best and most popular such items in the market, be it from Tridonic, LEDVANCE, Philips, VS Lighting solutions, or LitePlan. V-TAC - Innovative LED LightingGood quality LED light bulbs and LED fittings at a cost that's lower than most others, the V-TAC innovative LED lighting have both LED lamps and incorporated LED fittings. They now came out with some IP65 rated exterior and interior LED wall lights, and soon they will bring out the V-TAC pro 180lm/W super efficient LED lights and LED fittings. Hamilton Litestat - Switching and Dimming LED lightsIf you want more complex systems for both lighting and smart home control, you have to see what Hamilton has to offer. We distribute some of their more popular switches, sockets, dimmers, and other wiring accessories in finishes such as white plastic and transparent. It was great to see them and to realize how many more ranges they have and are considering to bring in. Integral LED - LED Lamps and LED FittingsDefinitely a great chat with the good people at Integral LED, where we saw some really interesting developments in the fire rated IP65 rated downlights (their Lux fire range). Dimmable, fire rated, and IP65 rated - what else do you need? Plus, they came out with a LED panel - back-lit technology with market leading efficiency, up to 90% more efficient than popular edge-lit panels (in their own words). And their EvoFire range simply blew our mind away: reducing a downlight to a simple structure where you put the LED lamp: a canless design with a low profile body that is lightweight.Integral LED Lights at Sparks ALL LED - LED Marker Lights and LED StripsLocated next to their friends at Aurora, ALL LED displayed some really neat paintable LED marker lights (you can design them with your own design or colour, as needed), which are also dimmable. Their 1W range of micro-marker and mini-markers are like no other, and they come in warm white, cool white, or blue. Plus, there's quite a few inground - driveover LED marker lights, and some low level LED accent lighting. And the LED strip lights with different wattage per meter, plus RGB, RGBW, and wi-fi controls. Aurora Lighting - Smart, Fire Rated, and LED LightsThey are well-established in the lighting market, and their ranges are both popular and recognizable. Aurora Lighting provides a wide range of residential and commercial LED lights and LED lighting systems, including solutions for smart lighting spaces and smart home devices. They do both indoor and outdoor LED lights, with different IP rating. Crompton Lamps with Phoebe LED and FireSafeHere's an example of a company who knows what to do when LEDs are everywhere: Crompton Lamps, who via their Phoebe LED (Phoebe, the goddess of light) division, provide a wide range of LED downlights that are both dimmable and fire rated, offering a tri-colour select of 3000K, 4000K, or 6500K. And with their Spectrum range they have a 10W color-changing downlight tunable white, with a RGB colour changin rim, controllable via a Bluetooth app. Gimmicky? Probably, but there's a chance that some office buildings or conference rooms may opt for different light settings as different occasions and meetings come up. Illuma Lighting - LED Track SpotlightsGoing bigger and more professional with great performance, Illuma Lighting are definitely one of the leaders in the UK lighting industry in terms of LED track lighting - both 1-circuit and 3-circuit. And every year they bring in not only a new catalog with more wall LED lights, ceiling LED lamps and track spotlights, but different and better LED track spot lights to meet both the residential and commercial lighting needs. And they have some really lovely wall washers which can be re-oriented as needed - for indoor wall lighting.Buy Illuma Lighting at Sparks Wago - Connectors and ConnectionsEverybody knows and loves the WAGO solutions, and on our website we have a dedicated section to their versatile and popular products. Block systems, connectors, PCB terminal blocks, rail mounted terminal blocks, and many other connectors - the electricians love them, and we as wholesalers love to provide them. Great to see them at Lux Live 2017! As we were saying at the beginning of this article, there were many more other exhibitors and cool products, innovations, talks, and seminars, and we only had a few hours to quickly visit some of them. Loved the show this year, looking forward to the Lux Live 2018! PS. Follow us on Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, and Twitter to see more pictures and updates on LuxLive and other events.

We at Sparks love the people at Rako and their great products, and we're so glad that they put out quite a few videos to introduce some of their dimming solutions. They offer a flexible and extendable dimming solution "at the click of a button" or at the "touch" of the iPad/iPhone app for both domestic and commercial environments. For the second year in a row, we went to visit the annual Lux Live lighting exhibition in Earl Court, and we were not disappointed. We took a look around, visited some of our old friends :) and made new friends too, and listened to a talk or two, snapped a photo or two, tweeted a bit.... Remotely control the Rako Dimming System with the free Rako iPhone App

Recently, the people at Rako Controls have launched their iPhone App - remotely control and adjust the Rako Dimming system in your home / in the office from your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad! Rako has released an iPhone App - which is now downloadable from the iTunes App Store - that gives you control of a Rako installation from an iPhone, an iPad, or iPod Touch. This app gives you control of any room, whether it be lighting or curtain/blind control. The App gives access to all the available rooms, scenes and channels, all of which can be named for easy identification. The App can be used with existing wireless systems, the new wired network or combined systems. Minimal System Requirements In order to allow the iPhone / the iPad / the iPod touch to communicate with the network a Rako APR-Bridge (for use with wireless-only systems) or WRE-Bridge (for wired systems) needs to be installed along with a wireless router for the Wi-Fi link with the iPhone. The Bridge needs to be uploaded with a Rasoft programming file for the project. The file can either be the existing project file, if available, or created using the Rasoft programming software (included) which requires a PC running Windows XP or Vista. For advice on how to create profiles, edit options, and control the Rako Dimming System via the Rako App, do not hesitate to contact the people at Rako Controls. Rako Wireless Dimming Controls in the lounge and in the restaurants, pubs, and clubs

This article is a continuation of the one entitled, Rako Controls Provide Simple Lighting Control in a Sophisticated World, Whole House Control. Previously, we have introduced how to have a whole house control with the amazing Rako Controls - now in this article there are some specific venues that can have their lighting controlled with the help of the Rako Dimmers. The installation of most scene set dimmers today involves most of the time a complete rewiring. The Rako lighting control equipment overcomes this problem immediately making retro-fit simple. Unlike the most conventional systems, the Rako control panels communicate with dimmer modules using wireless radio communication. This allows the addressable dimmers to be fitted locally to the light fittings. With 65,000 possible addresses and a range of 15m, or 100m with a booster, the Rako Wireless Controls can accommodate the largest of schemes. Each control panel can select up to 4 preset scenes plus off and has a master raise and lower. The system commissioning and the programming of scenes can be performed from the control panel, hand held or from your PC using the incorporated intuitive software. Indeed, the Rako modules can be quickly and easily installed into any environment, domestic or commercial, from hotel bedrooms and function rooms to restaurants and churches. Rako Wireless Dimming Controls - This is how it is done! The installation of most scene set dimmers today involves most of the time a complete rewiring. The Rako lighting control equipment overcomes this problem immediately making retro-fit simple.Unlike the most conventional systems, the Rako control panels communicate with dimmer modules using wireless radio communication. This allows the addressable dimmers to be fitted locally to the light fittings. The system commissioning and the programming of scenes can be performed from the control panel, hand held or from your PC using the incorporated intuitive software. Rako Wireless Lighting Controls - Whole House Control scheme Below is a simple suggestion of installing the Rako Lighting Controls at home - a whole-house lighting control scheme. The description and functions of the devices are described below. The Rako Master Control (top right corner device) - For ultimate simplicity and control, have the whole house control in the entrance hall. The panels can be set to give ‘Master’ control allowing the whole house to be switched on or off at the touch of a button. The Rako Timeclock (right, middle) - The Rako Timeclock module allows timed events to be replayed with dawn/dusk times and ‘holiday mode’ mimics normal lighting usage in a vacant property. With mapping and macro functions, the timeclock can become the hub for systems requiring more sophisticated programming giving access to pathways of light, sequencing and conditional events. The Rako Rack Options (right, bottom) - When it is necessary to wire back to one location or for larger installations the RAK-4 can be stacked to form 8, 12 or 16 way cabinets and with one Rx-Link receiver module located anywhere in the building, it still allows Rako wall panels to communicate without data cabling. Rako Wireless LED Dimmers, Controlling the LED lighting with Rako Dimmers and Modules

LED lighting is becoming more and more widely used but until recently the LED light sources have given low lighting levels and have been used predominantly for local effect lighting. As the levels of lighting have been low the necessity to dim the LEDs has been a low priority. With the increase of the application and usage of the LED lights / LED lighting in both domestic and commercial environments, it is is becoming increasingly necessary to have matching switches, dimmers, and wiring devices to control the LED lighting. The LED Lamps capable of replacing 20-35w Tungsten halogen lamps are now being developed and the requirement for control and dimming has become more important. These LED lamps are considerably more efficient than the Tungsten lamps, and they have long lamp lives - making this light source increasingly popular despite the expense. All the LED lamps need an associated driver unit in order to limit the current driving the LED. Some newer lamps integrate the driver into the base of the lamp but many use a separate driver unit. Many of the drivers are not able to be dimmed; however, some options are now becoming dimmable. There are two types of LED drivers: The Constant current - generally used for high wattage LEDs where the LEDs are wired in series. The Constant voltage - where low wattage LEDS are wired in parallel. The Rako Wireless Dimming solutions offer some blobs/dimmers that match this need. The following list shows the different LED control options available from Rako: Rako Constant current single channel 18w - The Rako RLED18-1ACI Single Channel 18W LED driver, Constant Current 1 channel LED driver. The Rako Constant current three channel 36w - The Rako RLED36-3DCI Three Channel 36w LED Driver module, wireless dimming LED driver. The Rako DMX (for drivers requiring a DMX control input). The Rako 0-10v dimmer (for drivers requiring a 0-10v control input) - The Rako RDF800-C Ceiling Light Dimmer 0-10V fluorescent, wireless lighting-controlled light dimmer. The Rako Mains dimmed using a trailing edge dimmer. The Rako Non-dimmed switching. The single channel modules or outputs have the facility of 4 scenes, off plus manual raise/lower. With modules designed for 3 color LEDs, the raise/lower buttons act as cycle start/stop buttons controlling a scrolling cycle through the 4 colors assigned to each of the scene buttons. Rako Wireless Lighting Controls - Scene lighting with the Rako Dimmers

We have recently added to our website(and are in the process of adding details and prices) a new range of Wireless Lighting Controls, the Rako Dimmers. Rako is leading the way in providing state of the art digital dimming technology. Their innovative solutions meet the needs of a diverse range of applications by offering lighting systems that are simple to use, creative, easily installed and cost effective. As you would imagine, the people at Rako have all the basics right but where they tend to outsmart other offerings is through quick and effortless installation. Rako provides all the benefits of a sophisticated lighting control system but without the hassle of re-wiring.The Rako modules can be quickly and easily installed into any environment, domestic or commercial, from hotel bedrooms and function rooms to restaurants and churches. Put simply, Rako has no limits! This article is a simple introduction to this range - we will continue to write about this amazing range / innovative technology - designed, manufactured, and made in Britain. Why Scene Lighting? Scene lighting has long been used in the commercial world for restaurants, conference facilities etc. Gaining its name from the theatre where complex lighting changes are needed for each Scene, it allows users to recall a lighting mood by pressing one button rather than adjusting several rotary knob type dimmers. Push button control also allows two (or more) way control of lighting, handheld remotes and integration with home cinema, home automation or security systems. All Rako dimmers will also offer soft start and voltage-controlled maximum output which greatly improves the lamp life of incandescent and halogen lamp types. How does the Rako Dimmer Work? Each Rako dimmer (or channel in a RAKO system) remembers four different level settings for each of the 4 possible lighting Scenes or Moods. When a button is pressed on a Rako wall-panel the message is transmitted via a coded Radio signal to the dimmer/receivers. Each dimmer then fades to the setting assigned for that button. When button two is pressed in the above example the lights in the room will cross-fade to a setting with the wall lights at 70% the downlighters at 20% the pendant at 50% and the uplight at 100%. This might be, for example, the setting that is best for viewing TV. Other scenes could be for reading, general use and relaxing late at night with a glass of wine! Once a scene has been recalled its overall level can be adjusted using the raise/lower buttons. This is a temporary adjustment, the permanent scene levels are set by programming from the wall panels, or by using the Rako software. Why use the RF(radio frequency) control? Most scene control systems dictate that the lighting circuits be brought back to a central dimmer box or rack and that the control panels are connected to this using data cabling. This is not normal domestic wiring and may well be undesirable for a new installation or even impossible for a retrofit project. Rako’s wireless system is designed so that the dimmer modules can be fitted into a standard domestic wiring scenario and the control panels communicate with the modules using RF signaling, thus eliminating the need for data cabling. A modular wireless system allows for easy expansion at a later stage.Buy Rako Dimming Systems at Sparks

Scene setting with Rako ControlsIt is important to define your lighting zones. Start by grouping lights that need independent control. Think of each dimmer channel as a lighting “zone.” Kitchens, living rooms, master bedrooms, and bathrooms all deserve distinct zones. Even within a single room, consider splitting circuits—e.g., bedside reading lamps vs. ambient lighting—for ultimate flexibility.Scene lighting has long been used in the commercial environment to create appealing lighting in areas such as restaurants, conference facilities and boardrooms. Gaining its name from the theatre where complex lighting changes are needed for each scene, it allows a lighting mood to be recalled by pressing one button rather than adjusting several rotary knob type dimmers. Applied to home use, scene-setting allows a user to select the appropriate mood of lighting for the task at hand (even if that’s watching TV), and all the lighting in the room will adjust to the preferred, pre-programmed setting. There are several reasons why scene-setting is desirable. Most lighting settings are quite repeatable. So why not just press a button to get that setting? For rooms where there are multiple circuits of lighting, a single keypad avoids the need for lots of individual rotary dimmers that all need adjusting before the correct settings are obtained. If those multiple circuits are quite different lighting types, e.g. mains voltage downlights and low voltage LED tape, then the dimmers required for these might well use quite different dimming techniques, and may not be available in matching styles. With a scene-setting system like Rako, the dimmer packs are remote units and can therefore be specific to the lamp types in question. Look at the Rako list of dimmer modules to see the variety needed to maximise the performance of all lighting types!Once a push button style of dimming is chosen, then multi-way dimming is possible, either from multiple wall panels or hand-held remotes. Push button dimming also allows the system to be interfaced with other controls, such as audio-visual or security systems and also allows control from smartphones or tablets via an App. The Rako system allows table and freestanding lamps to be incorporated into the overall control, either by dimming special 5A sockets (for lighting use only) or by installing a wireless module in line with the flex and plugging into a standard 13A socket.Make the most of Lighting Scene SettingCreating effective mood lighting goes hand in hand with good lighting. A good lighting design creates interest and highlights features in a room. A flat, even lighting is fine for task lighting but cosy mood lighting is best achieved by being able to create pockets of light. This takes a combination of design and control.Best Lights for Mood Setting2. Controlling the Lights via Wireless or Wired SystemsWhen planning a Rako system, possibly the biggest consideration is whether to plan for a wired or wireless system. Both can integrate together to form combined systems but which should form the core platform? For a retrofit solution, the wireless option is obvious. Cabling will already be in place so being able to put wireless modules where the cables can be accessed, such as behind downlights, and the lack of data cabling to the switch positions will dictate a wireless solution. For new installations, the choice between wired and wireless solutions is something for consideration.Wireless is generally easier to install and commission. It is usually a lower-cost solution, more so for smaller installations, especially where they can be manually set up.The structure of a wired system, requiring a RAKLink for control panel connections, typically requires more circuits to amortise the fixed costs. The wired keypads are also more expensive than their wireless counterparts.A wired system has advantages in avoiding any concerns about wireless transmission range and the lack of dependence on battery power for the keypads means that they can have backlit buttons. The connection via a data cable allows more information to be transmitted, so there is more functionality available and as all wired devices are connected, the whole system can be interrogated and, if need be, upgraded.A wired system is more involved to set up and commission, and will require the use of a laptop to programme. Larger and more involved wireless schemes may require this too but simpler wireless systems can be set up without the use of a laptop.Rako Controls Wired/Wireless3. Planning the Rako Controls SystemAs a basic premise, a dimmer channel is needed for each group of lighting that needs to be controlled separately. With Rako, this may either be a single module or a channel within a rack. The more groups, or channels of lighting, the more flexible the system is but equally, the cost goes up accordingly. Of course some grouping is obvious, a row of wall lights will always need to be set to the same level, but maybe front and rear wall lights should be separated to allow differential lighting from front to back, especially if a TV is on the front wall.Give some priority to rooms; everyone has their own opinions on which rooms are key. Whilst dimming in a master bedroom is desirable, if nothing else to avoid the harsh glare of light first thing in the morning, guest bedrooms may come further down the pecking order. Bath and shower rooms may be more appealing under subdued lighting but even more so if they're used at night, again when a harsh glare is unpleasant. Are bathrooms often used for baths when a relaxing soak might be enjoyed more in softer lighting? For a true whole house control of course, all the rooms should be controlled by the system and its nice to have, for example, a 'Master Off' button by the bedside to be sure all lighting is off but a complete system is potentially expensive. When considering wet rooms, think of the extract. Regulations may require this to be controlled by the lighting system but again with a separate control module this can be programmed not to come on during those nightly trips to the loo.Open plan spaces may need to be thought of as separate rooms for control. This isn't a necessity, but when a room has two uses, which maybe concurrent, think about how the lighting will be controlled. For example in an open kitchen/living space, will people want to dim the living room lights whilst the kitchen needs to be bright, especially if you're entertaining and preparing food at the same time. Of course, a scene setting system is designed to give flexible control but when you consider, say 4 scenes in the living area and 4 in the kitchen, this gives 16 combinations. If nothing else a panel with 16 scene options is confusing and messy. In this instance, it might be better to think of the space as 'two control rooms' even if there is a 'Master' control for the area. Don't have circuits of lights that span the two areas as these may well get caught in the 'battle for control'.Even within a scene-set room, some circuits may benefit from separate control for instance, bedside lighting. As with the previous example above if the bedside lights are integrated into the normal room scenes the possible combinations of ambient room settings multiplied by the his/her on/off scenarios, let alone with dim level options, can be considerable. Instead, possibly think of either having a separate, normal switch for these, or a separate button, or buttons (for dimming) on a Rako plate. There are solutions for these issues but they are best discussed before buying a system rather than trying to configure unsuitable parts after the event.Hallways are often statement rooms and have lighting that benefits from intelligent control. They do however, also have a requirement for two way control of stairwells and landings. Many users are familiar with the traditional two way switching concept. When planning a Hall/Stairwell area it is worth thinking about how the different floors are to be controlled, both separately and together. Commonly, the best solution is to use control panels with slightly different layouts to give the flexibility required. Examples of these are the RCM072 and RCM102.Think about where wall panels should be located and what they should control. Generally, a wall plate should control scenes within the room itself. Depending on the scope of the system one control panel can be programmed to control different rooms but this can rapidly make the system confusing to use and often clients' wishes have unforeseen contradictions that make programming difficult or impossible.Consider what other controls may be required, such as 'holiday mode' to simulate occupancy. Interfacing to security systems so that lights come on as well as an alarm sounding. Is control from a smartphone or tablet required? If the system is to be integrated with an audiovisual system then ask the AV installer for advice, they will have experience with lighting control systems and be able to help. Finally, remember that at any point Rako will be happy to help with planning a system for you.Planning a System for Lighting Control4. Rako Controls needed for the SystemNotwithstanding variants with different button arrangements, Rako keypads come in one of three basic forms.Wired Keypads - WCM, WK-EOS and WK-MOD – The requirement for wired keypads is fairly well defined in that they are the only Rako keypads that connect directly to a wired network via a CAT5 data cable.Wireless (RCM) and Wireless NFC Keypads (RNC, RK-EOS and RK-MOD) - Both transmit wireless messages to dimmers with RF receivers, the difference is in how they are configured and their programming capabilities. The RCM range of keypads use small switches (DIL) to determine which House and Room they control. These switches are easily changed with a small screwdriver or tip of a pen. Once set the address of the whole keypad is set and all the buttons will control the lighting in that Room. These keypads can be configured without the need for programming software. Some advanced features can be set by pressing and holding certain button arrangements (see the application sheet Advanced Control Panel Features) or by programming macros in a Hub that supports these. The NFC range of keypads (RNC, RK-EOS and RK-MOD) have no addressing switches and are programmed exclusively by NFC (Near Field Communication) via a Hub or RAMPI programming interface connected to a PC or Mac and using RASOFT Pro software. Programming requires a working knowledge of the Rako software but does give access to more features than the RCM range keypads.Full Range of Rako Controls5. Using Non-Rako Keypads with Rako SystemRako’s scene-setting keypads rely on push-button control to recall the moods or scenes of lighting. Whilst the plates are available in a wide range of finishes to suit most interiors, there are instances where either the modern look of the push button keypad is not appropriate or where a switch plate style has been chosen and the Rako keypads must match. For these instances, Rako can provide the solution in the form of the RCI-4L and RCI-7M interface units. Both accept inputs from third-party switches and convert these into Rako scene commands. The RCI-4L takes latching inputs, such as those given by a conventional light switch or toggle or dolly-type switch. The RCI-7M accepts momentary inputs such as those from ‘retractive’ or spring-loaded switches.Switches and Keypads at Sparks6. Integration with Curtains and BlindsCurtain and blind control can be integrated into a Rako lighting system, or indeed be used in a stand-alone configuration.  As with all things Rako, the solution can be wired or wireless. As well as control, Rako can now also supply blinds and curtain track from our partners QMotion UK and Silent Gliss, the leading UK suppliers of quality blinds and track.7. Common Problems or Pitfalls in Lighting ControlKeep it simple. Despite the technology behind a control system, the user controls should be simple and easy to use. Rako knows that all users are different and that systems can be programmed to alarming degrees of complexity. Some users might revel in this but experience shows that the best results are achieved by clear, easy programming. Rako’s suggestion would be that keypads should give similar control throughout the house, e.g. a series of scenes in descending order of brightness. Scenes should control the room where the keypad is located in. Controlling remote rooms is possible, but should be considered carefully as it often has unforeseen implications.Rako engineers, both field and office-based have years of experience with programming control systems. It's always worth consulting before planning how buttons are configured. That said, Rako control panels can be set with advanced functions such as ‘Master Off’. As Rako Controls has plenty of experience with common programming scenarios, there are often practical ways of overcoming these and button layouts are available as standard to suit.Another common downfall is for customers to buy dimmers and fittings before consulting with Rako or a Rako dealer.  Ensuring compatibility between fittings and dimmers can be a complex process, as can be selecting lamps and drivers with the best dimming performance. At Rako, we are happy to spend time helping customers make these decisions.  It is far better to talk to us beforehand and get things right rather than afterwards when there is a problem that needs sorting out.Best Wireless Lighting Control8. Retrofit Lighting Controls: Wired, Wireless or Hybrid — What’s Best in 2025?

Most UK homes are existing properties, not new-builds, and many still rely on basic switches. As energy efficiency, smarter lighting and flexible control become standard, retrofit systems let you upgrade without full rewiring. In 2025, the installer’s key decision is: go wired, wireless, or hybrid? Upgrading to more flexible, efficient lighting control is now both cost-effective and increasingly expected (for energy savings, comfort, and sustainability). A retrofit lighting control project means you’re adapting an existing wiring and switch/fixture layout rather than starting from scratch. Here is our guide to retrofit lighting controls - wired, wireless, or hybrid - what is best in 2025; consult any of the sections below to find out more:Why Retrofit MattersWired Systems — Reliable but More InvasiveWireless Systems — Retrofit FriendlyHybrid Systems — Best of Both WorldsWhich Approach is “Best” in 2025? Here are our recommendationsWhat to Consider When Choosing a Home RetrofitHow to Choose in 2025Final Thoughts1. Why Retrofit MattersIn older homes, introducing smart lighting control doesn’t mean tearing out plaster or chasing walls. Retrofit modules allow you to modernise with minimal disruption, delivering benefits like:Energy savings (via dimming and occupancy control)Better ambience (scenes, moods)Smart control (app, voice, timed automation)For retrofit, wireless modules “can be installed behind a ceiling or if the lighting is wired back to a central location” — avoiding the need for data cabling. 2. Wired Systems — Reliable but More InvasiveWired control systems use dedicated control cables/data links between switches/keypads and modules. They offer reliable performance, full scene functionality and minimal signal interference — but require more wiring effort.Recommended wired-capable products at SparksDirect:Varilight V-Pro Smart Master LED Dimmer Module (and supplementary controllers) — These allow multi-way dimming, smart control, and work with many LED loads. Lutron RA2 Select Wireless Control Dimmer Kit (in-line dimmer + wireless controls) — Though part wireless, the in-line dimmer sits behind the circuit, offering a wired control backbone. Use wired control where you are comfortable adding control wiring (e.g., during renovation), and need strong reliability/integration.3. Wireless Systems — Retrofit FriendlyWireless modules are the standout for retrofit: minimal or no extra cabling, quick installation, and flexibility. They’re ideal when back-boxes or conduits are limited.Top wireless-ready modules available at SparksDirect:Rako RMT-500 In-Line RF Dimmer (Trailing Edge) for GU10 LED, etc. — Designed for retrofit installation behind a ceiling void; controlled by Rako RF transmitters. Rako RDA-800 In-Line RF Dimmer Module (0-10 V, DALI/DSI loads) for LED drivers — Advanced wireless module for larger or more complex retrofit zones. These products allow you to keep existing wall switches or replace them with wireless controllers, with minimal wiring changes.Wireless Lighting Control4. Hybrid Systems — Best of Both WorldsA hybrid approach uses a wired backbone (for major circuits) and wireless modules (for zones where wiring is difficult). This gives flexibility, reliability and phased upgrade capability.Using the modules above, you could wire core lighting circuits (e.g., living room, main hall) with Varilight or Lutron in-line modules, then add Rako wireless modules in out-of-reach areas (e.g., loft conversion, attic space) for a true hybrid system.5. Which Approach is “Best” in 2025? Here are our recommendationsGiven the trade-offs and the typical UK retrofit home environment, here’s a recommended decision matrix:Minimal disruption & lowest cost: Go wireless modules (smart WiFi modules, wireless receiver dimmers) for key areas. Ideal if you want quick wins, minimal rewiring, and incremental upgrades.Balanced reliability with flexibility: Use a hybrid system — wire the backbone (core circuits/rooms you don’t want wireless issues) but deploy wireless modules in zones where wiring is difficult or future changes are likely. This gives the best future-proofing and scalability.Full control & high-end upgrade: Wired (or wired backbone) for full scene/automation, especially in high-spec homes, luxury rooms, or if you’re rewiring anyway.Consideration for LED retrofit loads: Whichever path you choose, ensure modules and drivers support LED dimming, trailing edge, etc. Without this, retrofit lighting may flicker or underperform.Software/smart integration: In 2025, homeowners expect app control, scene setting, and voice assistant integration. Choose systems supporting that (e.g., Lutron RA2).Future-proofing & flexibility: Wireless and hybrid systems allow changes (room layout changes, extension, re-zoning) without rewiring. As a note: retrofit wireless offers easy re-configuration. So, in summary: for most UK home retrofit installs in 2025, a hybrid approach offers the strongest combination of cost, ease of install, performance and future-proofing.Wired Lighting at Sparks6. What to Consider When Choosing a Home RetrofitExisting Wiring & Access- Are there spare conduits, back-boxes, or data cables?- How disruptive would adding new wiring be? Wireless modules can minimise this.- Our advice is that for retrofit homes, wireless modules are key. Load Types & Compatibility- Many homes now use LED retrofit lamps, which may have compatibility issues with older dimmers or relay modules.- Ensure the control modules support the correct load type (LED, halogen, mains, ELV). The Rako RDA800, for example, supports 0-10V/DALI/DSI drivers for retrofit.- Similarly, if you intend to dim, ensure dimmers are LED-compatible and correctly specified.Control Requirements & Scenes- Do you need simple on/off only, or advanced scenes (e.g. “TV mode”, “dinner mode”)?- How many zones? Are controls needed remotely (smartphone/app) or just wall keypads?- Rako emphasises scene-setting in its retrofit offering. Budget & Installation Time- Wireless is often cheaper and quicker to install in retrofit settings. Industry data shows wireless can reduce labour & wiring cost. - Independent Electrical Contractors- Wired/hybrid may cost more upfront but boost long-term reliability and integration.Future Proofing & Expandability- Choose systems that allow expansion: adding rooms, changing layouts, app integration, and smart home integration.- The hybrid model supports this best: you wire the backbone now, then add wireless modules later.Installer Expertise & Support- Some systems require programming or commissioning (e.g., scene modules). Wired systems, especially, may need a laptop configuration. SparksDirect: “A wired system … requires the use of a laptop to programme.”- Ensure you or your installer is comfortable with the chosen system’s commissioning.7. How to Choose in 2025Here’s a decision guide:Existing wiring access: If wiring is tight or walls are finished, wireless is ideal.Load types: Ensure the module supports your load (LEDs, GU10, low voltage, DALI). For example, the Rako RDA-800 handles LED drivers via 0-10 V/DALI/DSI.Control complexity: Simple on/off or dimming may only need a wireless module; full scene-setting favours wired or hybrid.Budget & disruption: Wireless is often lower-cost and faster; wired/hybrid costs more but delivers full performance.Future growth: Hybrid systems allow expansion later — add wireless modules or wired keypads as needed.Installer capability: Some wired systems need commissioning software; wireless modules may require programming, but less cabling.8. Final ThoughtsIn most UK retrofit installations in 2025, wireless or hybrid lighting control will deliver the best balance of cost, ease and future flexibility. Wired systems retain their importance in full rewires or luxury projects, but the retrofit module options from SparksDirect (Rako and Varilight for wireless/hybrid, Lutron for in-line smart kits) make upgrades very feasible. If you’re an installer or homeowner planning a lighting upgrade, focus first on your wiring constraints, load types and control expectations — then pick the module range that fits.
