Top Tips for Safely Using Portable Heaters at Home

As energy bills are predicted to rise even more, you may be worried about how will you heat your home during the winter. One way to heat your room or office is by using portable heaters; they are a convenient alternative to central heating, especially when you need heat in one or two rooms. Why not heat up only the space you use and live in, instead of heating up the whole house? Here's where portable heaters come in. They are very popular and quite handy when the chilly months of the year are upon us. However, it is best to use the portable heaters safely, as outlined both by Dimplex here and by Electrical Safety First here. The Three Types of Portable HeatersYou may have seen or used a portable heater at home or in your office to warm up the room or the space you are in. There are three main types of portable heaters in the UK:Fan Heaters: these are electric heaters that have a fan incorporated, which pushes out warm air once plugged in and turned on. They are quite convenient when you need heat right now, but many of them don't have a heating element that keeps them warm after they are turned off. Here are some of the fan heaters we sell.Oil-filled Radiators: as the name suggests, these are panel heaters that are filled with oil and offer radiant heating once turned on. The oil inside makes them warm and keeps them a while longer when they are turned off. Take look at the oil-filled heaters available at Sparks.Halogen Heaters/Infrared heaters: These kinds of heaters offer heat or warmth by radiating infrared light. These heaters use halogen elements enclosed in lamps or bulbs, which directly heat the object when the light reaches it. They don't technically heat the air in the room but rather the object which needs to be heated up. At Sparks, we mainly sell infrared heaters for warehouses or large rooms. Buy Classic 2kW Convector HeaterHow to Safely Use Portable Heaters at HomeMany of the fires caused by portable heaters are because of some basic mistakes which, once identified, eliminate the risk of fire. For example, if a heater is placed in a place where people walk by, it is easy to be knocked down and start a fire. Or if you hang the laundry above or near the portable heater, it can be easy for it to catch fire. Furthermore, when portable heaters are too close to little children or elderly ones, it is easy for them to get burned.Buy Riviera 2kW Oil-Filled Radiator Here are some of the top tips on safely using portable heaters at home:Always ensure to position your portable heater on a level surface, not uneven, and well away from anything that could knock it over. If the surface is uneven, it is easy for the heater to fall. If the heater is on a path of those around, it can be knocked over. The portable heaters need to be at least 1m away from combustible materials and textiles. Make sure things such as papers, furniture, curtains, and even laundry are at least 1m away from the heater. Yes, the laundry may seem to dry faster when closer to the heater, but the risks outweigh the benefits.Turn off the portable heater when not in use or at night. Never leave the heater unattended or ON, especially while you are asleep. It may sound simple, but it is easy to turn on the heater and feel so warm that you fall asleep and forget about it, and it is quite dangerous to have the heater on at night.Do not power your portable heater from an extension lead. The wattage of the heater will always exceed the rating of the power lead, and adding extra electrical items in that extension multiplies the risk. Plug the heater directly into the wall-mounted socket.Inspect your heater regularly and don't use second-hand heaters. Sometimes there may be a burnt smell once the heater is on due to dust or other things, and in such cases, the heater needs to be cleaned before use. Also, it is not safe to use second-hand heaters.Regularly inspect the heaters for damage, deterioration, or dirt. If the heater has a loose cable or part, do not use it. If it is not in a good condition, it's safest not to use it.Do not dry your laundry over the heater. Yes, it is convenient to have the laundry rack close to the heater or even above it, but it is not safe at all. Make sure there are no textiles within 1m of the portable heater.Buy your new portable heater made by known manufacturers and from recognised retailers, and ensure to choose a product that has a BEAB mark. At Sparks, we have a wide range of excellent portable heaters. To be extra safe, it is recommended to register the new portable heater you have purchased. And to be even safer, you can check the Product Recall Checker to see whether the portable heater or any other electrical items have been recalled.

Why Infrared Patio Heaters can be better than Gas Patio Heaters this Winter

Long have the British public retreated back to the stuffy confines of their house due to the weather suddenly turning Arctic on them, and who's to blame them - even a hot chocolate can't fight off the -5 degrees chill outside... Well, we here at Sparks may have found a solution in our selection of infrared halogen patio heaters, which will allow you to enjoy clear, beautiful winter skies from your porch. Problems with using a Conventional Gas Patio Heater for your Garden When it comes to gas heaters the reality is that they're incredibly energy inefficient.  A standard 13 kg of natural gas can warm an area of up to 25 square meters for 12 hours but could heat the same area in an enclosed area for 120 hours. The amount of energy uselessly dissipating in outdoor areas is simply staggering and takes its toll on the environment. The reason for this gross inefficiency is to do with convection, the method through which traditional heaters work. They heat the air and surfaces around your body, eventually leading to your body warming up, almost like a chain reaction. The first problem with this is that it takes quite a while for you to feel the benefits of convection heating, and you don't want to be standing round outside freezing your socks off on a cold winter's evening. And this is just the start; the waste of heat with traditional gas heaters is extraordinary. As a Guardian columnist puts it when discussing the pros and cons of outdoor heaters, traditional patio heaters: ‘Kick out the equivalent emissions of a speeding truck, but unlike with vehicles there is nothing filtering or reducing their polluting gases. In 2008, EU ministers even discussed the possibility of outlawing patio heaters when they realized their wasteful nature. There was an argument that if a car were to be left running for a year it would emit three tonnes of carbon dioxide, yet if the same was done with a gas heater it would produce four tonnes. There is also the price consideration to take into account - gas patio heaters can take £1.20 to run, when compared the average running cost of an electric heater - 15 pence per hour. Still, people don't want to hurry home at the end of a fantastic night, at an outdoor bar for instance, because of the cold, but what is the alternative?Buy Patio Heaters at Sparks Why Infrared Patio Heaters are the way forward Infrared-based patio heaters bring all types of advantages to the table, such as in the lack of warming up period you'd get with a gas patio heater. Infrared heaters heat objects and people directly, by creating a solid movement of heat in the body through optimum blood circulation, which generates a feeling of warmth. The lack of warming up time is just one among many reasons that infrared patio heaters are a fantastic way to heat the exterior areas of your home. The costs of infrared heaters are far lower than that of electrical convection heaters. For instance, 600w of the infrared panel would provide the same amount of heating comfort as 1500w convection. The spread of energy is seen to be more 'consistent', meaning that heat is dispersed in a more even way and prevents any annoying 'cold patches'. These are seen with convection heating and often lead to cold air convalescing at the floor level, biting at people's ankles while their upper bodies remain warm. Infrared rays may reduce mould by keeping a relatively even temperature even in an outdoor environment. Health benefits of infrared could include developing immune functionality, detoxing and reducing joint stiffness. Infrared is also seen to be useful in cases with people with health conditions such as asthma or bronchitis. Here is an article outlining what infrared patio heaters are and the best places they can be used. They are associated with outdoor pubs but can be used across all kinds of buildings and establishments, both commercial and domestic. We at Sparks embrace infrared heaters :) For instance, the 1300K Knightsbridge is a joy to behold and use. An IP24 rated outdoor infrared heat, which is particularly environmentally friendly and eco-efficient when compared to gas heaters. With directional fitting, a 50mm pole bracket supplied, and adaptability for pole mounting for added convenience. This patio heater can heat up your garden exterior or porch this Christmas season, as it can be attached to any area where it is most called upon for. On a similar scale, let's not forget about the BN Thermic 1.5kW patio heater (coming in white or black) with an IP rating of IP55, which is convenient for turning on even when it's rainy or wet outside. Just imagine the merriment people will get from enjoying wonderful frosty nights outside, merrily eating and drinking, protected all the while by some innovative Infrared technology.Buy Infrared Heaters Now is the time - invest in smart, energy-saving, cost-saving infrared patio heaters this Christmas!

An Infra-Red Heater Warms a House for Life, Not Just for Christmas!

They're more and more common in pubs and outdoor areas. We went to the Red Market this weekend and huddled around the heaters (never mind that they were in the bar area). These wonderful devices emit infrared light, which is invisible because the human eye can't detect light at that wavelength. How an Infrared Heater Works  Roughly, the infrared heater is just a thing with a higher temperature that transfers energy through electromagnetic radiation to another thing with a lower temperature - like the earth and the sun. Your skin and clothes absorb the light. This is known as radiant heat. And we mean, technically a ceramic radiator is a radiant-heat fitting, but electric infrared heaters do a much better job with no plumbing required and for much less power consumption of a conventional electric heater! Advantages of Infrared Heating Electric infrared heaters are very efficient as most of the energy is transferred into radiant energy (although some is lost due to conduction and/or convection). Overall this means savings of up to 30-50% on heating costs. Not only that, but there are no harmful fuels to release into the environment, making an infrared heater a perfect Christmas gift for the cold and the eco-conscious. Normal convection heaters warm the air in a space, which leads to "heat layering" - not so with infrared! Another plus for your comfort is the fact that they are practically noiseless because no air is being pumped. However, an infrared heater is not a very good replacement for a central heating system. Point one in the right direction, though, and you'll be nice and toasty - even on the patio in the middle of December! We have a couple of infrared spot heaters in the store, and we heartily recommend these devices to warm your feet (and your whole self) this winter!Buy online Infrared Heater
