We visited Lux Live 2017, so here are some Interesting LED Lights and Technologies

Last week we went to the annual Lux Live, Lux Live 2017, one of the greatest lighting shows in Europe. We only had a few hours on the first day to check it out, so we didn't attend seminars and speeches, but the place was pretty packed and there was a lot of good vibe all around. We saw some really interesting LED lights and LED lighting technologies, and we also saw quite a few Chinese manufacturers bringing their LED lights to the European market. As they say on their website, lighting is changing, and there are smarter and better luminaires. What seemed to be a "fad" a few years ago with LEDs, now it has developed to become one of the biggest lighting revolutions ever. From the Gooee IoT arena to the LIA live and the escape zone, from exhibitors to hundreds of free talks (when you're tired of walking and talking), from the lightspace arena to the LIA lighting academy, and from Li-fi experience to the smart spaces conference, we loved this years Lux Live! We didn't take too many pictures, and we can't talk about every company we met, so here we'll list some of our friends and suppliers that we got to talk to and see their newest stuff. Astro Lighting - LED lights and even some Track LightsThey came out with their new catalogue fresh off the press at this lighting show, and they displayed their lights in a very simple design. It was an honor to meet James Bassant, the design director and one of the founders of Astro Lighting, and have a chat concerning some of their newest additions (like the new track lights and spotlights). Loved the simple and not-so-packed arrangement of their LED wall lights, ceiling lights, and exterior lamps; they really give you an impression of their excellent design.Buy Astro Tracks and Spots Rako Controls - All NEW Wireless ModulesIf you're looking for mood lighting and ambience lighting and you're not ready to break the bank with more expensive solutions like Lutron, Rako Controls is what you need. At LuxLive they brought in their all new wireless modules, and they had a great display of the DMX, constant current LED modules, silent transistor dimmers, curtain and blinds, constant voltage LEDs, inductive dimmers, DALI control, 1-10V and DSI, and switched loads modules. Also, they have a new NFC product range, with the wired functionality from a wireless keypad, and they connect to any conventional switch. B.E.G. - the Lighting Control ProfessionalsWe visited BEG only in passing, and we admired their PIR detectors and their new PureColour detector for wellbeing with color control (controlling the light color in a LED bulkhead). German quality! Horton LightingMany of our ballasts and fluorescent trays are from Horton Lighting, and they continue to bring in some of the best and most popular such items in the market, be it from Tridonic, LEDVANCE, Philips, VS Lighting solutions, or LitePlan. V-TAC - Innovative LED LightingGood quality LED light bulbs and LED fittings at a cost that's lower than most others, the V-TAC innovative LED lighting have both LED lamps and incorporated LED fittings. They now came out with some IP65 rated exterior and interior LED wall lights, and soon they will bring out the V-TAC pro 180lm/W super efficient LED lights and LED fittings. Hamilton Litestat - Switching and Dimming LED lightsIf you want more complex systems for both lighting and smart home control, you have to see what Hamilton has to offer. We distribute some of their more popular switches, sockets, dimmers, and other wiring accessories in finishes such as white plastic and transparent. It was great to see them and to realize how many more ranges they have and are considering to bring in. Integral LED - LED Lamps and LED FittingsDefinitely a great chat with the good people at Integral LED, where we saw some really interesting developments in the fire rated IP65 rated downlights (their Lux fire range). Dimmable, fire rated, and IP65 rated - what else do you need? Plus, they came out with a LED panel - back-lit technology with market leading efficiency, up to 90% more efficient than popular edge-lit panels (in their own words). And their EvoFire range simply blew our mind away: reducing a downlight to a simple structure where you put the LED lamp: a canless design with a low profile body that is lightweight.Integral LED Lights at Sparks ALL LED - LED Marker Lights and LED StripsLocated next to their friends at Aurora, ALL LED displayed some really neat paintable LED marker lights (you can design them with your own design or colour, as needed), which are also dimmable. Their 1W range of micro-marker and mini-markers are like no other, and they come in warm white, cool white, or blue. Plus, there's quite a few inground - driveover LED marker lights, and some low level LED accent lighting. And the LED strip lights with different wattage per meter, plus RGB, RGBW, and wi-fi controls. Aurora Lighting - Smart, Fire Rated, and LED LightsThey are well-established in the lighting market, and their ranges are both popular and recognizable. Aurora Lighting provides a wide range of residential and commercial LED lights and LED lighting systems, including solutions for smart lighting spaces and smart home devices. They do both indoor and outdoor LED lights, with different IP rating. Crompton Lamps with Phoebe LED and FireSafeHere's an example of a company who knows what to do when LEDs are everywhere: Crompton Lamps, who via their Phoebe LED (Phoebe, the goddess of light) division, provide a wide range of LED downlights that are both dimmable and fire rated, offering a tri-colour select of 3000K, 4000K, or 6500K. And with their Spectrum range they have a 10W color-changing downlight tunable white, with a RGB colour changin rim, controllable via a Bluetooth app. Gimmicky? Probably, but there's a chance that some office buildings or conference rooms may opt for different light settings as different occasions and meetings come up. Illuma Lighting - LED Track SpotlightsGoing bigger and more professional with great performance, Illuma Lighting are definitely one of the leaders in the UK lighting industry in terms of LED track lighting - both 1-circuit and 3-circuit. And every year they bring in not only a new catalog with more wall LED lights, ceiling LED lamps and track spotlights, but different and better LED track spot lights to meet both the residential and commercial lighting needs. And they have some really lovely wall washers which can be re-oriented as needed - for indoor wall lighting.Buy Illuma Lighting at Sparks Wago - Connectors and ConnectionsEverybody knows and loves the WAGO solutions, and on our website we have a dedicated section to their versatile and popular products. Block systems, connectors, PCB terminal blocks, rail mounted terminal blocks, and many other connectors - the electricians love them, and we as wholesalers love to provide them. Great to see them at Lux Live 2017! As we were saying at the beginning of this article, there were many more other exhibitors and cool products, innovations, talks, and seminars, and we only had a few hours to quickly visit some of them. Loved the show this year, looking forward to the Lux Live 2018! PS. Follow us on Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, and Twitter to see more pictures and updates on LuxLive and other events.

Videos of Rako Wireless and Wired LED Dimming Solutions for Home or Office

We at Sparks love the people at Rako and their great products, and we're so glad that they put out quite a few videos to introduce some of their dimming solutions. They offer a flexible and extendable dimming solution "at the click of a button" or at the "touch" of the iPad/iPhone app for both domestic and commercial environments. In this article, we're introducing three main videos: the Rako whole house dimming and scene control setting system, the wireless LED dimmer controller, and the Rako LED dimming control solutions. Rako Whole House Dimming and Scene Control Setting System - Video The Rako whole house dimming and scene control system is great for both residential and commercial applications. Via the programmable scene control panel, you can change the lighting scene setting. For example, in the kitchen, you can have scenes like food prep, family dining, entertainment, party, etc. In the living room, you can easily use the Rako iPad / iPhone app to set all the lights ON, or have scenes like watching a movie (home cinema), reading a book, relaxing, etc. Also, you can control the lights, the blinds, and the curtains in multiple rooms from a single control point, turn all the lights off from a single point, link the Rako lighting to a security system, or schedule timed events. Buy While House Dimming System Rako Introduces the Wireless LED Dimmer Controller The wireless dimmer controller Rako RMT500 is a single-ended dimmer, a wireless module, ideal for the latest LED lamps, with control over IP by using Rako bridges and wall control panels. This LED dimmer is silent and it can be addressed by pressing the button on the front of the dimmer. It comes with 16 scenes and has longer fade rates. Follow the slideshow and watch the video below to find out more. Buy Rako Wireless Dimmers Rako LED Dimming Control Solutions - Overview There are so many ways to control the LED lights, and Rako provides quite a wide range of solutions for dimming the LED lights, whether mains dimmable, leading edge, and trailing edge (including the GU10 LED lamps, the LED fittings with a Mains Dimmable driver). Whether wireless or wired, the Rako dimming LED drivers and dimmers offer a wide range of LED dimming systems for domestic and commercial use. You can watch more such videos via Rako YouTube channel, and you can order a wide range of Rako Dimming systems and Rako Wireless / Wired systems via sparks at, Wireless Dimming Systems.

Great Light Fittings we Saw and Liked at the Lighting Show #MayDesign Series

On Monday, May 19th 2014, we visited the Lighting section of the May Design show at the London Excel, since many of our suppliers encouraged us to come over and see what they have new. It was truly amazing to see so many new lighting fixtures - all of them in cool settings and with excellent energy saving properties. We were impressed to see the LED wall lights, LED flood lights, and LED strip lights displayed, and we really liked the new fittings exhibited together with their presentation. An exciting show with more than 400 exhibitors in total, with sections like: the furniture show, the Lighting show, the Decor, the Kitchen and Bathroom show, and the DX show (a platform for design excellence with innovation and creative thinking). We will definitely visit again next year! What we Saw and Liked at the May Design Lighting Show You may say that we were biased in what we looked and, took pictures of, and spent time to look into, but we went to the May Design lighting show mainly to see what's new in the lighting market and what our suppliers brought to the table. And yes, we did take some pictures, some of which can be found on our Twitter stream while others are posted below. Apologies in advance for the quality of the pictures, but we hope you will enjoy them nonetheless. Great job, guys!

Lux Live 2013 Day 1: LED Lights, Energy Saving, and Lots of Good Talks

For the second year in a row, we went to visit the annual Lux Live lighting exhibition in Earl Court, and we were not disappointed. As the title says it, everyone was focused on energy saving and LED lighting. And, if possible, the reducing of the costs both for manufacturing the LED lights and for purchasing them. We took a look around, visited some of our old friends :) and made new friends too, and listened to a talk or two, snapped a photo or two, tweeted a bit.... Speaking of pictures, here are some of our Instagrams from this time (in case you missed them or you didn't follow us on twitter): Illuma Lighting at #LuxLive2013 - new LED spotlights for track systems, including some awesome remote-controlled track spotlights for commercial lighting!Buy online Illuma Lighting at Sparks Danlers - Lots of PIR occupancy switch modules, either ceiling or wall-mounted. Four simple steps to Programming Scene Levels with the Rako Dimming System

Rako Controls is leading the way in providing state-of-the-art digital dimming technology - innovative solutions for dimming, switching, and controlling lighting systems at home, in the office, or in more commercial environments. You can read more about these intelligent dimmers and dimming systems via the Lutron Dimmers and Intelligent Dimming. Besides the amazing devices - manufactured and designed in the UK - they offer, there are many other guides and application sheets available on their new website. Below we are posting their guide for programming scene levels with the Rako Dimming systems. In the following procedure, both the controllers (wall panels and hand-held remotes) and the receivers have an automatic time out after approximately 3 minutes when in programming mode. This feature avoids the possibility of either being left permanently in programming mode. This may cause confusion if either the controller or receiver times out before the procedure is complete. It is worth becoming familiar with the procedures before starting the addressing procedure. If at any time it is necessary to start again the controllers can be returned to normal mode by pressing the ‘Off’ button and the receivers by resetting the electrical supply. Step 1: Put controller into programming mode by pressing and holding and both raise and lower buttons together. After 5 seconds the red LED on the panel starts to flash. The panel is now in programming mode. Release the buttons TIP: Press the scene button first Note 1: A Rako panel will enter programming mode at Channel 0. It is not possible to give a receiver an address of Channel 0 but this gives a consistent starting point. Note 2: When in programming mode the buttons have functions as detailed in Table 1. Note 3: As soon as the panel enters programming mode all receivers controlled by that panel will flash their loads (indicating channel 0). As each individual channel is reached by stepping up and down using buttons 1 and 2 (see Step 2) that particular channel will flash its load only. If at any point it is desired to check which channel the controller is currently talking to, pressing button 3 will flash that channel’s load without stepping up or down. Step 2: Press button 1 once to step up to the first channel. Adjust the level for this channel by using the raise and lower buttons. When the first channel is set at the correct level press button 1 again to step up to the second channel and adjust the level using the raise and lower buttons. Repeat this until all of the channels are set at the desired level. If at any point it is necessary to go back a channel, pressing button 2 will step down one channel at a time. Step 3: When the levels on all the channels are set to the desired levels press button 4 to save the settings Step 4: Press Off button to exit controller from programming modeRako Wireless Dimming

But on our website we are selling the Rako Dimming Controls and, as people purchase them and install them, pictures show up here and there with their amazing applications! The collection of pictures below is taken from the great World Wide Web and represent some of the many brilliant applications of the Rako Lighting and Blinds Control system all around the world. The Rako Wireless Dimming Controls in detail - ceiling, in-line, and pendants dimmers

After introducing the technology behind the Rako Dimming Controls via, Scene lighting with the Rako Dimmers, we thought it would be good to write more about the types of wireless controls offered by Rako.Note: Please check the existing range of Rako dimming controls, as their offer and range is continually being updated. Most of the existing dimmers from Rako Controls are on our website and they are also introduced via the Intelligent Dimmers: Rako and Varilight. Below we are starting with the first three types of Rako Dimming Controls: Ceiling mount dimmers for downlights, In-line for free standing lamps, and Wall lights or pendants. Rako Wireless ceiling mount dimmers for downlightsFor either mains or low voltage spotlights the RDL250C or RDL500C modules can be fitted through a standard 50mm downlight cutout. The existing switch should be removed and the switched live given permanent power. The old switch can now be replaced be a Rako RCP07 panel. Please see below a wiring diagram of the Rako dimmers for the downlights. Rako Wireless Dimmers, In-line for free standing lamps RDL250L or RDL500L modules can be wired in-line with the flex for a free standing lamp. One module could feed a ‘ring’ of socket outlets but this would dictate dedicated wiring and special 2A or 5A sockets to avoid normal appliances being plugged into a dimmed output. Below: a simple wiring diagram of the Rako inline dimmer for standing lamps. Rako Wireless Dimmers for Wall Lights or Pendants The Rako PILL dimmer module can be used for circuits where access to the wiring is particularly difficult. This is often the wall lights or sometimes the central pendant, where the only access is to the switched line behind the switch. The PILL dimmer fits into a (deep) UK back box and does not need a neutral connection. The PILL is rated for 60-250w and is suitable or mains voltage lighting only. Below: a simple wiring diagram of using the Rako dimmers for wall lamps or for pendants. Note: If there is room for a transformer there is normally room for a Rako RDL series dimmer. Note: this is the first part of the series introducing the Rako Wireless Dimmers, as presented in their catalogue and presentation on their website. To purchase these, please visit the Wireless Dimming Controls sectionBuy Rako Dimming Systems

Remotely control the Rako Dimming System with the free Rako iPhone App

Recently, the people at Rako Controls have launched their iPhone App - remotely control and adjust the Rako Dimming system in your home / in the office from your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad! Rako has released an iPhone App - which is now downloadable from the iTunes App Store - that gives you control of a Rako installation from an iPhone, an iPad, or iPod Touch. This app gives you control of any room, whether it be lighting or curtain/blind control. The App gives access to all the available rooms, scenes and channels, all of which can be named for easy identification. The App can be used with existing wireless systems, the new wired network or combined systems. Minimal System Requirements In order to allow the iPhone / the iPad / the iPod touch to communicate with the network a Rako APR-Bridge (for use with wireless-only systems) or WRE-Bridge (for wired systems) needs to be installed along with a wireless router for the Wi-Fi link with the iPhone. The Bridge needs to be uploaded with a Rasoft programming file for the project. The file can either be the existing project file, if available, or created using the Rasoft programming software (included) which requires a PC running Windows XP or Vista. For advice on how to create profiles, edit options, and control the Rako Dimming System via the Rako App, do not hesitate to contact the people at Rako Controls. The Rako RAH-SMART handheld remote control, programmable remote controller

We do our best to introduce the main Rako Wireless modules, both the "blobs" / the dimming drivers and the other devices that are more auxiliary but also help with the system. Please note: this handheld remote control is no longer available; see here the full range of Rako Controls available. It is time to talk a little about the smart remote controller - which is quite expensive, but it is extremely intelligent! Check out the description below and see for yourself! What is the Rako RAH-SMART handheld remote control? The RAH-Smart hand controller from Rako offers a stylish handset with a color display screen to give more user information and flexibility.  This handset can be used in multiple rooms - which are selectable from the menu, and allows Room, Scene and Channel naming. Also available on the screen: the curtain and blind controls with open/closed and individual blind control options. The controller is shipped with factory default settings - you will need to program it in order to operate correctly with your specific RAKO system. The Rako RAH Smart remote controller can be programmed manually using its keypad with the attached instructions. You can also make sure that the RAH Smart is pre-programmed by the system installer through the USB interface. How does the Rako RAH-SMART handheld remote control operate? Typically, the controller will be used to control lights in one or more rooms. The remote controller can issue "scene" commands that recall preset light levels for each dimmer, or can control individual circuits separately. Also, the Rako RAH-SMART remote controller can also be used to open and close curtains and blinds. In this case, the curtains and blinds have been programmed to a different logical "room" to that used by the lights. The "lighting room" and the "curtains room" can be combined using the "group setup" menus. Once this is done, the shortcut key on the side of the controller can be used to quickly switch between the lighting control and the curtain control. This remote controller has a bright OLED colour display giving feedback of room, scene and circuit descriptions. It is a simple, effective and complete control of all Rako devices is possible. The unit can be configured either manually using the on-screen prompts or with the RASOFT programming software. Using the relevant RF interfaces the RAHSMART can also be used to control window treatments with the Rako RACUB module and multi-room audio systems with the appropriate interface module. Rako Wireless LED Dimmers, Controlling the LED lighting with Rako Dimmers and Modules

LED lighting is becoming more and more widely used but until recently the LED light sources have given low lighting levels and have been used predominantly for local effect lighting. As the levels of lighting have been low the necessity to dim the LEDs has been a low priority. With the increase of the application and usage of the LED lights / LED lighting in both domestic and commercial environments, it is is becoming increasingly necessary to have matching switches, dimmers, and wiring devices to control the LED lighting. The LED Lamps capable of replacing 20-35w Tungsten halogen lamps are now being developed and the requirement for control and dimming has become more important. These LED lamps are considerably more efficient than the Tungsten lamps, and they have long lamp lives - making this light source increasingly popular despite the expense. All the LED lamps need an associated driver unit in order to limit the current driving the LED. Some newer lamps integrate the driver into the base of the lamp but many use a separate driver unit. Many of the drivers are not able to be dimmed; however, some options are now becoming dimmable. There are two types of LED drivers: The Constant current - generally used for high wattage LEDs where the LEDs are wired in series. The Constant voltage - where low wattage LEDS are wired in parallel. The Rako Wireless Dimming solutions offer some blobs/dimmers that match this need. The following list shows the different LED control options available from Rako: Rako Constant current single channel 18w - The Rako RLED18-1ACI Single Channel 18W LED driver, Constant Current 1 channel LED driver. The Rako Constant current three channel 36w - The Rako RLED36-3DCI Three Channel 36w LED Driver module, wireless dimming LED driver. The Rako DMX (for drivers requiring a DMX control input). The Rako 0-10v dimmer (for drivers requiring a 0-10v control input) - The Rako RDF800-C Ceiling Light Dimmer 0-10V fluorescent, wireless lighting-controlled light dimmer. The Rako Mains dimmed using a trailing edge dimmer. The Rako Non-dimmed switching. The single channel modules or outputs have the facility of 4 scenes, off plus manual raise/lower. With modules designed for 3 color LEDs, the raise/lower buttons act as cycle start/stop buttons controlling a scrolling cycle through the 4 colors assigned to each of the scene buttons. Rako offers a range of innovative wireless dimming solutions for both LED lights and other types of lighting. We will soon come back with another article that introduces the main Rako Wireless LED dimmer devices.Buy Rako Dimming Systems at Sparks

Rako Wireless Lighting Controls - Scene lighting with the Rako Dimmers

We have recently added to our website(and are in the process of adding details and prices) a new range of Wireless Lighting Controls, the Rako Dimmers. Rako is leading the way in providing state of the art digital dimming technology. Their innovative solutions meet the needs of a diverse range of applications by offering lighting systems that are simple to use, creative, easily installed and cost effective. As you would imagine, the people at Rako have all the basics right but where they tend to outsmart other offerings is through quick and effortless installation. Rako provides all the benefits of a sophisticated lighting control system but without the hassle of re-wiring.The Rako modules can be quickly and easily installed into any environment, domestic or commercial, from hotel bedrooms and function rooms to restaurants and churches. Put simply, Rako has no limits! This article is a simple introduction to this range - we will continue to write about this amazing range / innovative technology - designed, manufactured, and made in Britain. Why Scene Lighting? Scene lighting has long been used in the commercial world for restaurants, conference facilities etc. Gaining its name from the theatre where complex lighting changes are needed for each Scene, it allows users to recall a lighting mood by pressing one button rather than adjusting several rotary knob type dimmers. Push button control also allows two (or more) way control of lighting, handheld remotes and integration with home cinema, home automation or security systems. All Rako dimmers will also offer soft start and voltage-controlled maximum output which greatly improves the lamp life of incandescent and halogen lamp types. How does the Rako Dimmer Work? Each Rako dimmer (or channel in a RAKO system) remembers four different level settings for each of the 4 possible lighting Scenes or Moods. When a button is pressed on a Rako wall-panel the message is transmitted via a coded Radio signal to the dimmer/receivers. Each dimmer then fades to the setting assigned for that button. When button two is pressed in the above example the lights in the room will cross-fade to a setting with the wall lights at 70% the downlighters at 20% the pendant at 50% and the uplight at 100%. This might be, for example, the setting that is best for viewing TV. Other scenes could be for reading, general use and relaxing late at night with a glass of wine! Once a scene has been recalled its overall level can be adjusted using the raise/lower buttons. This is a temporary adjustment, the permanent scene levels are set by programming from the wall panels, or by using the Rako software. Why use the RF(radio frequency) control? Most scene control systems dictate that the lighting circuits be brought back to a central dimmer box or rack and that the control panels are connected to this using data cabling. This is not normal domestic wiring and may well be undesirable for a new installation or even impossible for a retrofit project. Rako’s wireless system is designed so that the dimmer modules can be fitted into a standard domestic wiring scenario and the control panels communicate with the modules using RF signaling, thus eliminating the need for data cabling. A modular wireless system allows for easy expansion at a later stage.Buy Rako Dimming Systems at Sparks
