LED Dimmers are now Available in All your Favorite Plates and Finishes!

The constant development of the LED lighting technology pushes the dimming industry forward; it is now becoming increasingly common to get not just an LED lamp but a dimmable LED lamp. Whether it is a LED integrated with the fitting or a GU10 LED light bulb, it is becoming more and more obvious that people want to dim their lights, and thus save energy. We can all agree that, once we switched from halogen lamps to LED lamps, the electricity cost has been slashed; how much more will it be even when we use an LED dimmer! Both for creating the right ambiance and for energy saving purposes, LED dimming is becoming quite necessary. It is no wonder therefore that most switches and sockets manufacturers have updated their range to include LED dimmers in their offer, and more and more people opt for a LED dimmer rather than a regular dimmer. LED Dimmers are now Available in all your Favorite Plates and Finishes! When it comes to the style of the dimmer/socket/switch, the customer has specific preferences, especially when he sees the suggestions made by the architect or the interior designer. This is why there are such plates as transparent plates (invisible plate / clear perspex plate), flat white plastic plates, flat metal plates, raised metal plates, and stepped plates, many of which come in different variations. Besides the type of plate, there are many finishes that the switch, socket, or dimmer can come in, such as brass (satin, polished, antique, etc), bronze (polished, matt, antique, etc), chrome (satin, brushed, polished, etc), Verdigris, painted, matt (black or white), and many others. And since the customer already has switches and sockets installed in a particular finish, there's the need for the LED dimmer to be in the same finish as well. Forget about the LED driver that used to be necessary - now the dimmable LED lamps simply need a good quality LED dimmer, and they work very well! There are at least two ways of replacing the existing wall-mounted dimmer with a LED dimmer: Purchase a new LED dimmer, in the plate and finish you require Replace the existing dimmer modules at the back with LED dimmer modules. In both cases, a registered electrician has to be the one who replaces or installs the LED dimmer.Buy LED Dimmers at Sparks The good news, however, is that LED dimmers are now available in all your favorite plates and finishes! You can have LED dimmers in flat plate white plastic, square edge white plastic, invisible plate, screwless flat plate metal, flat plate (chrome, bronze, brass, black, white, and other finishes), raised plate (polished or satin chrome, brass, bronze, white, etc), stepped plate (with dual finish or single finish in Satin/Polished chrome or brass), and many others. Let us give you some examples of LED dimmers: 1 gang LED dimmer in brushed steel raised plate from BG Electrical 1 Gang trailing edge rotary LED dimmer in an invisible plate with an antique brass knob from Forbes and Lomax 2 gang LED dimmer in a screwless transparent plastic plate from Hamilton Litestat 2 gang LED dimmer in a polished brass Elite stepped plate from Heritage brass 3 gang LED dimmer in a screwless matt black flat plate from Heritage Brass 3 Gang LED dimmer on a flat plate in brushed chrome from BG Nexus 3 Gang LED Dimmer - Trailing Edge Rotary LED Dimmer Invisible Plate with Brass Knob from Forbes and Lomax 4 Gang LED dimmer on a primed white screwless flat plate from Heritage Brass 4 Gang LED dimmer in a screwless polished brass flat plate, Studio range, from M-Marcus The above list is a small selection from the wide range of LED dimmers available on our website. And if you simply wish to change the dimming module to a LED dimmer, why not check out the Varilight JP250P (V-Pro 1 Gang 2 Way Trailing Edge 10W-120W LED Dimmer / 250W Halogen Module Replacement) or the Danlers DPDLED (Rotary and Push LED Dimmer Module 5W - 250W - leading edge - for Dimmable LED Lamps). And if you cannot find the LED dimmer in the finish and plate you already have, you can leave us a comment here or email us at sales @ sparksdirect.co.uk, and we will get back to you.Full range of LED DImmers

6 Top Tips to Avoid Overloading Your Sockets and Extension Leads at Home

Are you using your sockets and extension leads properly? Are you sure you are not overloading them? It is so easy to overload the socket or the extension lead, thus risking fire! We were recently browsing the www.twothirtyvolts.org.uk website from the Electrical Safety Council, and we played around with their lovely Socket Overload Calculator. We were shocked to find out how many of the devices and appliances in the kitchen or bedroom, when combined together, will blow the fuse! Although there's space to plug in four appliances (in a 4-way bar adaptor) this doesn't mean it's always safe to do so! It is good to know some of the top tips that would help you avoid the risk of overheating and possibly fire. 6 Top Tips for Avoiding the Overload of Your Sockets Before we even start the list of the top tips for avoiding the overloading of the sockets or extension leads, take a look and play a bit with the socket overload calculator below, plugging in the appliances and devices you have at home... The Socket Calculator has been brought to you by Electrical Safety First. For more safety information visit http://www.electricalsafetyfirst.org.uk The Socket Calculator has been brought to you by the Electrical Safety Council.  It is very surprising to see that it's so easy to plug in appliances which you need - yet in total they use more than 13A or 3000W of energy. Now, let's see some of the top tips to avoid overloading your sockets: Check the Current Rating of the Extension Lead - before plugging any appliances into it, make sure you know what's the rating. Most leads are 13A rated or less, and you need to know it! Know the Total Current Rating and Wattage of the Plugged-in Appliances - before you plug in and use the appliances in an extension lead or socket, make sure you know what's the total of the current rating (the amperage) and the wattage of those appliances. The total current rating cannot exceed the maximum current rating of the lead, and the wattage cannot exceed 3000W. Otherwise, the plug in the wall socket can overheat and possibly cause a fire. Use only One Extension Lead Per Socket - it may sound stupid, but some people plug in an extension lead into an extension lead. Use one extension lead per socket only, otherwise the risk of overloading the wall socket and the extension lead plugged into it! If Possible, Don't Use a Block Adaptor but a Multiway Bar Extension Lead - many of the block adaptors (those blocks of plastic with many sockets on them) are not very safe, do not have a fuse, and are not recommended to be used. They increase the risk of overloading and fire, so, if possible, use a multi-way extension lead. Install More Sockets if Needed - if you regularly need to use an extension lead in a certain area of your house, it is recommended that you contact a registered electrician to install an extra double socket in that area. While he's at your place, why don't you ask him to check your installation and your sockets? Regularly Check for Danger Signs like: smell of hot plastic (melting sockets or appliances), sparks or scorch marks around a socket/plug/appliance, damaged or frayed leads, colored wire from inside leads showing at the plug, fuses that keep blowing for no obvious reason, etc. Anything that is suspicious or out of the ordinary when an extension lead is used should be alert for possible trouble!Buy online Switches and Sockets at Sparks What are the Ratings of the Most Commonly Used Domestic Appliances? Glad that you asked. Most people don't know what is the power rating of the appliance they are using, even though it is easy to find out. Via the ESC website you can find a list of the highest ratings of the most popular household appliances - which list we are reproducing below. For more information on this topic, we would recommend the twothirtyvolts.org.uk website and the section of Overloading Sockets / Safety In the Home. Visit the Cables and Extension Leads at Sparks to see the variety of extension leads and sockets, and make sure you do not overload them when installing them.

Top Tips for Electrical Safety in the Bathroom - Bathroom Safety

Accidents happen, but it is good not to provide the circumstances or the devices that cause electrical accidents, especially when it comes to the bathroom. Water is a good carrier for electricity, and in the bathroom there's plenty of water. You don't want these two to mix, or else there's the danger of electric shocks. When water and electricity mix, whether we touch electricity with our wet body of water just carries electricity and we touch it, the result can be deadly. In the bathroom, out of all the rooms in the house, there's the highest risk of electric shock. It is good to be very cautious when using electrical devices in the bathrooms. Suggestions for Bathroom Electrical Safety The sockets need to be at least 3 metres of more away from the water - if possible, no sockets in the bathroom, except the ones for shaver supply units or electrical toothbrush units). The location of the sockets matters! The shaver sockets/shaver points need to be located at a safe distance from the bath, the shower, or the source of water in the bathroom. Use appropriate IP-rated lights for the bathroom - see the IP rating chart and select the fittings that have a suitable IP rating for the respective zone. Keep Lights out of Reach of Water - it is preferable to use downlights or recessed lights, not hanging lights, and if possible, keep the light fittings away from the source and reach of water. Use a Pull Cord Switch - switching on / off with a wet hand can be dangerous, and the safest switch to use is the ceiling pull cord switch. Keep the Electric Heaters away from the Water - you may need an electrical heater in the bathroom to keep warm, but you need to ensure it is away from the bath and the shower. The Gas and Water Heaters need to be fixed and permanently wired unless they are powered by a socket fitted at least 3m away from the bath or the shower. Electric Showers - if you use an electric shower, it is recommended that it be supplied on its own circuit directly from the fusebox/consumer unit. No Hairdryers in the Bathroom - if possible it is recommended NOT to bring or use the hairdryer in the bathroom. Better safe than sorry - use the hairdryer in the bedroom if needed. DO NOT bring mains-powered portable electrical appliances in the bathroom (like radios, heaters, hairdryers, etc). There's a high risk of electric shock with any of them.
